Chew Valley Lake

several 'flaming arrow' scenes
Fight between Nasir and Sarak - The Sheriff of Nottingham

later on Thursday, August 18th, 2005

O.K., it's easy to find the lake.... but when you see that there normally is about 2 m more water in it... it might dawn on you, that it gets a bit more difficult to find what you are looking for there.

Most of the area around the lake is also a nature reservation area and you can't go everywhere you like...

So we were looking for a bridge with some water where outlaws can shoot flaming arrows. And at least in one shot you need some ground behind it so that the 'new' hooded man can stand there.
Here is bridge No. 1:

This is the same bridge from further into the lake (if there was more water).

As Jutta is convinced this is it, I am not too sure...at least in 'Herne's son' they have a lot of reed right in front of them. And for me this place does not seem to have had reed just next to the bridge. And the 'stream' goes a bit further so that it could be difficult to get someone standing there.
I have watched the episodes over and over again but still have no idea, where it is. The only thing I saw is - they seem to use more than one location.

But there were more bridges.... this one we found next:
It's nice, but there was not enough water anywhere near it. At least not in summer 2005. Might have been slightly different some 20 years back though. It was rather small so that i doubt there is enough space for 6 people.

But while fighting our way through lots of green stuff... we found this view:

Change the angle a bit and you have the place where Sarak and Nasir meet.
(We were thinking about going to Weston-super-mare beach where the desert scene was shot - but I have seen the Weston Festival on telly - there might not be much left of what was there before...)

So we were almost done at the lake and I just took some more pictures (actually, what you see on this website is about 10 % of the pictures I took). There is this nice little island in the middle of the lake...

First I was not even sure if I really saw something over there... but luckily I have a nice cam....
Another bridge.

I have no idea if it is practical to literally ship all the filming equipment to this island... but my votes go to this location rather than the first bridge.
Imagine: a bit more water and it will reach the footbridge. But there still is ground for reed in front of it.
As we could not get over there I don't know what exactly is beyond that bridge.

Unfortunately I forgot to ask Michael Praed the other week when we went to see his play in London. So this question will probably not be answered before August 2006. Or does anyone of you know?
Where have they filmed the 'flaming arrow' scenes???
